Smartphone-powered robotics with person following and autonomous navigation.
OpenBot combines Android smartphone software with a small robotic vehicle, using the phone as the robot’s computing device. Its software supports person following and autonomous navigation, alongside controller-based driving. The project supplies robot-body instructions, Arduino firmware and an Android robot app, plus a programming playground and a workflow for training driving policies.

Run modes
- Device firmware
An Arduino Nano or ESP32 sketch bridges the robot body and the phone.
Install methods
- Build from source
Build openbot.ino in the Arduino IDE. The iOS app is built with Xcode and is not on the App Store.
- Downloadable binary / archive
Install the Android robot-app APK from the latest release, or build robot/android in Android Studio.
Documented platforms
- Arduino Nano / ESP32 / Android / iOS beta / Linux
The firmware table pairs each robot body with Arduino Nano or ESP32. The robot app names Android, an iOS beta, and a Linux Python variant.
Resource and setup notes
- Constraint: The Arduino board has to be one the selected OPENBOT body supports, or the firmware build stops.
Settings live in the SETTINGS section of openbot.ino, or in an optional openbot_settings.h.
