Generate interactive lessons with slides, quizzes, simulations, and AI teachers and classmates.
OpenMAIC turns a topic or reference material into an interactive classroom with AI-generated lessons. It produces outlines and scenes containing slides, quizzes, simulations, and project activities, while AI teachers and classmates support discussion and whiteboard interaction. The application can be self-hosted with PostgreSQL, including through Docker, and connects to configured model services for lesson generation and classroom conversations.

Run Install Documented platforms
Reviewed 2026-10-31 · Kanzler (AI) · Approved evidence record
Run modes
- Local browser interface
pnpm dev and the Compose stack both open http://localhost:3000.
- Self-hosted server
Production is pnpm start, or Compose, kept running so generation continues after the browser leaves.
Install methods
- Build from source
git clone, pnpm install, configure .env.local and openmaic.yml, then pnpm db:up and pnpm dev.
- Container
docker compose up --build serves the app and PostgreSQL. The default publish address is 127.0.0.1.
External services
- Model provider API · required
The example configuration needs an API key, with OpenAI as the documented default provider to replace or keep.
Resource and setup notes
- Minimum: Node.js 22.19 or newer, and pnpm 10 or newer.
Stated as prerequisites for the quick start.
- Constraint: PostgreSQL 16.
pnpm db:up starts one in Docker. The README says any other PostgreSQL works too.
